THE open-air deck pulsed with the rhythmic dancing of hundreds of young people, their hands raised toward the pine trees above them, needles sparkling yellow, red and blue in the disco lights. Couples watched from the sides by bonfires, huddling against the breezes billowing in from the valley below the club. They were too focused on the music. Ramallah’ s twin-city, al- Bireh, was first built by the Canaanites around BC. According to Christian tradition, Joseph and Mary rested in al-Bireh on t heir way from Jerusalem to Galilee when they discovered that Jesus was missing. A Crusader church, known as the Church of the Holy Family, marks the spot where they stopped. Beitin is an ancient village located on the outskirts of al-Bireh.
Habitation in Beitin dates back to prehistoric times and excavations have uncovered flint tools, pottery and animal bones dating back to the 5th century BC. An old tower, known as the tower of Beitin is believed to be the site where Abraham, on his way from Hebron to Nablus, built an altar. It is also believed to be the site where Jacob dreamt of a ladder reaching up to Heaven.

Three years ago, the dating app Tinder, renowned for facilitating casual sexual encounters, presented TinderPlus, a paid premium service which offers, among many other things, a “passport” that allows you to roam and meet users worldwide. Like many modern dating services, Tinder offers its users potential matches based on location. The novelty of Tinder’s Passport is that it allows them to use the app as though they were in another city or country, getting to know love-starved people there — a great service for anyone planning a trip to a distant location and looking for someone to spend the night with, or more.
Passport lets you change your location to connect with people anywhere around the world,” is how Tinder explains the service. Search by city or drop a pin on the map and you can begin swiping, matching and chatting with Tinder users in a destination of your choice.
The Tumblr page posts singles‘ conversations from the dating apps Tinder and Grindr, revealing that there really is no escaping the area’s political tensions amid attacks in Israel and the Gaza Strip — even if you’re just trying to spark a conversation. But Kent said she was shocked by the “racist” responses she got when other users learned she lived in Ramallah, and decided to gather screenshots of similar conversations her friends in Palestine had, and posted them on a blog.
Now the excerpts, which Kent says are all from her or her friends’ personal conversations, are gaining traction online, highlighting how even something innocent like an online chat can spiral into heated political discussion. In one conversation, someone claiming to be from Tel Aviv, Israel, refuses to visit Ramallah because he says he doesn’t want to be killed. In another, someone assumes the other party is a Hamas supporter because she is in Palestine.
Yet another conversation brings up “Romeo and Juliet” — a way to justify an Arab and a Jewish person speaking to one another. The dialogue can go both ways, as tensions have been high between Israelis and Palestinians for decades. Kent, who blurred names and faces before she posted the snapshots online, said the blog isn’t designed to shed light on what dating life is like there, but just serves as further proof of how divisive the Middle East has become.

Hundreds of Palestinians took to the streets of Ramallah, the West Bank seat of the Mahmoud Abbas-led Palestinian Authority, to celebrate the 55th anniversary of the first attack on Israel launched by the terrorist Fatah movement. A dozen masked men brandishing assault rifles spearheaded the march, firing several rounds in the air.
Some also donned fake suicide vests, as a nod to the group’s past attacks on Israel. More similar demonstrations are expected across the West Bank, known in Israel as Judeah and Samaria, in the coming days. The Ramallah lynching was a violent incident that took place on October 12, at the el-Bireh police station, where a Palestinian crowd killed and mutilated the bodies of two Israel Defense Forces reservists , Vadim Norzhich Nurzhitz and Yosef “Yossi” Avrahami, [a] who had accidentally entered the Palestinian Authority -controlled city of Ramallah in the West Bank and were taken into custody by Palestinian Authority policemen. The incident was filmed by several media outlets, and caused a stir in Israel and elsewhere, despite Palestinian police attempts at confiscating the footage immediately after the incident.
Two drivers in the IDF reserve , chief sergeant “rav samal”, OR-7 Yossi Avrahami 38 of Petah Tikva , a toy salesman, and corporal “rav turai”, OR-4 Vadim Nurzhitz 33 of Or Akiva , a truckdriver who had made aliyah from Irkutsk 10 years earlier, returned to duty that day. Nurzhitz set out at 7 a. The two reservist drivers made their way in a civilian vehicle towards their unit’s assembly point near the settlement of Beit El. They had little army experience, were unfamiliar with the West Bank road system and drove through the military checkpoint outside Beitunia and headed straight into the Palestinian town of Ramallah 2 miles east of the checkpoint.
Reaching a Palestinian Authority roadblock, where previously Israeli soldiers had been turned back, the reservists were detained by PA policemen and taken to the local police station at Ramallah’s twin city el-Bireh , not far from Arafat’s headquarters. His death, according to Marwan Bishara of Al Jazeera , was attributed by locals to settlers in Halamish.
Rumors quickly spread that Israeli undercover agents were in the building, and an angry crowd of more than 1, Palestinians gathered in front of the station calling for the death of the Israelis. Word that two soldiers were held in a Ramallah police station reached Israel within 15 minutes. According to Roni Shaked, the IDF itself thought initially that the two must have been “undercover agents”. Soon after, Palestinian rioters stormed the building, overcame the Palestinian police and murdered and mutilated both soldiers.
Both Haaretz and Maariv reported that approximately 13 Palestinian policemen were injured while attempting to stop the lynching.

Biweekly Highlights Five Palestinians were shot and killed by Israeli forces during the Friday demonstrations near the perimeter fence in Gaza, and others were injured. Four of the fatalities, including a year-old boy, were shot with live ammunition on 21 December, which recorded more violent clashes than in previous weeks. A balloon carrying an explosive device reportedly landed near a kindergarten in southern Israel but did not explode.
The fifth fatality, a man with a mental disability, was shot in the head during a demonstration on 28 December.
Israeli forces on Thursday demolished the home of a Palestinian man accused of killing two Israeli soldiers in a shooting attack in the West Bank last December. Israeli bulldozers destroyed the home of Assem Barghouthi in the village of Kubar north of Ramallah at dawn Thursday, according to witnesses. Witnesses said that Israeli forces had cordoned off the area surrounding the targeted home, triggering clashes with dozens of Palestinian youths.
The Israeli authorities accuse Barghouthi of killing two soldiers and injuring eight Israeli settlers last year in two separate shooting attacks in the West Bank. Assem’s brother, Saleh, was shot dead by Israeli forces last December for his alleged involvement in the attacks. In the West Bank city of Nablus, meanwhile, the Israeli army demolished another Palestinian home on the pretext that it had been built without official permission. At dawn Thursday, two bulldozers backed by dozens of soldiers stormed the village of Burqa near Nablus before demolishing the structure, which had been owned by a local Palestinian.
Palestinians are forbidden to build structures in Area C without first getting permits from the Israeli authorities, which are almost impossible to obtain. In a related development, Israeli forces detained 17 Palestinians in overnight raids carried out across the West Bank, according to the Israeli army.
Suspects, the army added, had since been referred to the relevant authorities for interrogation.

Palestinian ‘honor killing’ sparks outrage, calls for women’s protection
Even Tinder that well known cultural and political barometer has been abuzz with the Israel-Gaza debate in recent days it seems, with a group of young Americans working as teachers in Palestine having set up ‘Palestinder’, a Tumblr charting conversations about it on the dating app. Screengrabs posted of Tinder threads generally see the blog’s creators informing people that they live in Ramallah, Palestine’s de facto administrative capital, with responses ranging from “there is no such place as Palestine” to “that’s where the terrorists live”.
Co-founder Caitlin Ken told IBTimes UK that she came up with the idea for the blog while “checking out the Tinder scene here in Ramallah,” one night, when she was “shocked to receive some overtly racist responses from Israeli matches once they found out that we were teaching Palestinian kids in Ramallah for the summer”. Online dating quickly turned into a “social experiment”, with Kent inviting colleagues and friends to get involved.
